SIXTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘I have not come to abolish the Law but to complete it’
Jesus never tried to destroy the past. He built on it. When the old Law, the Law of Moses was overly concerned with externals, keeping the rules, Jesus asks us to go deeper. For instance, the Law says ‘don’t do anything wrong’; Jesus says ‘don’t even desire to do something evil’. The Law says ‘do not kill’; Jesus says ‘do not even be angry’. The Law says ‘’don’t commit adultery’; Jesus says ‘don’t even consider it’. Jesus shows us, then, that the future builds on the foundation of the past. The past is really the gateway to the future. There is a tendency today to denigrate everything associated with the past and glorify the ‘enlightenment’ of the present. Much wiser to acknowledge that the past is where we learn the lesson; the future is where we apply it. Winston Churchill was right, I believe, when he remarked after the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940: ‘If we open a quarrel between past and present we shall find that we have lost the future’
.Springtime Prayer
“ Nothing is so beautiful as Spring, when weeds, in wheels shoot long and lovely and lush”
Spring light in the morning brings with it the hints of hope , and promise of Summer. So many green shoots and the buds of new life we can so easily miss. The birds sing the songs of surprise that Winter has removed its grey coat. The little lambs dance in meadows not yet green in grass. The sunlight of day stretches the evening to make a mirror of the lake. The birds and the bulbs, the lambs and the light are a prayer of hope, Spring hope.
Loving God of Springtime Surprise us with the joy of hope Melt our Winter hearts with soft breaths of Springtime. Allow the Holy Spirit of Jesus to fuel bright our imagination with dance, colour and song. Let us be mindful, joyful and thankful to our Springtime God of life and love. Amen.
