PENTECOST SUNDAY

 ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’

 Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, a Polish Jew invented Esperanto, an auxiliary International language in the late 19th century. He dreamed of a world without war, and he believed that the first step on this road would be to break down the language barrier between peoples. The experiment failed. On this Feast of Pentecost we remind ourselves that the language of the Holy Spirit does cross all boundaries and speaks to all hearts. It is the life-giving language of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control. If people decided to speak this language more frequently they would renew the face of the earth. Words create worlds. It’s interesting to note that the Buddhist religion promotes the same approach to living: ‘better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace’. Spirit of the living God fall afresh on us.

The Church’s whole life and mission

depend on the Holy Spirit;

He fulfils all things’ (Pope Francis).

 THE DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY  took place on Sat May 14th last. Thank you to the many delegates from the 41 parishes of the diocese who took part in the task of trying to discern pastoral priorities for the years ahead. Since September 2019 the delegates were invited to take part in a listening process throughout the diocese. Over the first few months, delegates worked with a wide and varied group of people, to look at their needs and what parish meant for them today. Some of those who took part were involved in parish life and others were not; there were also a good many individual submissions received from people throughout the diocese over this period of time. From these submissions a number of pastoral priorities were identified as follows: Mission to youth. Mission to families. Mission for lay formation. Subsequent to the beginning of the assembly process, Pope Francis invited submissions from around the world in a Synodal pathway. The work and viewpoints that were shared at the assembly over the last two years have been compiled to form the basis of our submission to the Synodal pathway. This submission will be available on the diocesan website website: ardaghdiocese.org. The steering committee will address the task of implementing some of the recommendations in the near future

PENTECOST SUNDAY , which this year falls on Sunday 5 June, has been designated as a  Day of Prayer in Thanksgiving for the diocesan phase of the Universal  Synod. PRAYER BEFORE AN EXAMINATION Dear Lord, as I take this exam, I thank you that my value is not based on my performance, but on your great love for me. Come into my heart so that we can walk through this time together. Help me, not only with this test, but the many tests of life that are sure to come my way. As I take this exam, bring back to my mind everything I studied and be gracious with what I have overlooked. Help me to remain focussed and clam, confident in the facts and in my ability, and firm in the knowledge that no matter what happens today you are there with me. Amen

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP

This is a suggested prayer that may be used over the coming weeks and months as we await the appointment of a new shepherd for the diocese

God, shepherd and guide, in your mercy, give your Church in our diocese a shepherd after your own heart who will walk in your ways, and with loving care watch over your people. Give us a leader of vision and a teacher of your truth. So may your Church be built up and your name glorified; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
