THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘Once the hand is laid to the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God’
Anyone who has ever attended the National Ploughing Championships will understand the image used by Jesus in todays’ Gospel when He tells His disciples that once they put their hands to the plough they must not look back. No ploughman ever ploughed a straight furrow while looking back over his shoulder. He must not be distracted by what he has left behind. Jesus calls His followers to persevere in commitment. He doesn’t want lukewarm service. He invites them to a pilgrimage, not a parade; to a fight, not a frolic. He makes it clear that without commitment there is no depth in anything. In other words, we must not look back and say why, but rather look forward and say why not? Looking back brings you regrets; looking forward brings you opportunities. Your destiny will never be found in the rear view mirror! As President Lyndon B Johnson reminded the American people just one week after the assassination of John F Kennedy in November 1963: ‘Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose’. The Christian marches forward to shape the future with hope

Thursday 30 June: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church
Friday 1st July St. Oliver Plunkett Oliver Plunkett was born at Loughcrew, Oldcastle in 1625. His family were Irish nobility and were supporters of King Charles I. Oliver was ordained to the priesthood in Rome in 1654 and in 1669 he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh, returning from Rome during difficult times for the Catholic Church in Ireland. He was arrested in Dundalk in 1679 and found guilty of “promoting the Catholic faith” at a trial in London. He was the condemned to a gruesome death, being hanged, drawn and quartered on 1st July 1681 at Tyburn. St Oliver was canonised in 1975 by Pope Paul VI.
Prayer: God of Life, who cares for all creation, and calls us to justice and peace, May our security not come from arms, but from respect. May our force not be of violence, but of love. May our wealth not be in money, but in sharing. May our path not be of ambition, but of justice. May our victory not be from vengeance, but in forgiveness. May our unity not be in the quest of power, But in the vulnerable witness to do your will. Open and confident, may we defend the dignity of all creation, sharing, today and forever, the bread of solidarity, justice and peace. This we ask in the name of Jesus, your holy Son, our brother, who, as victim of our violence, even from the height of the cross, gave forgiveness to us all. Amen.

The Loser’s Blessing
Lord bless the folk who never quite got there
The people who intended something fine
The folk who might have lived a better, nobler existence The ones who somehow always failed to shine

The people who tried to keep their temper
And yet who seemed to lose it all the more
The one’s who haven’t made their name in business
Who should be rich but always will be poor

The folk who aren’t as clever as they might be
Who aren’t as good and feel their efforts are in vain
Lord bless all these—and me among them
And give us all the heart to try again Fr. Ronan Drury RIP
Prayer for the appointment of a new Bishop God, shepherd and guide, in your mercy, give your Church in our diocese a shepherd after your own heart who will walk in your ways, and with loving care watch over your people. Give us a leader of vision and a teacher of your truth. So may your Church be built up and your name glorified, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
WATERWAYS NEWS We were saddened to  find that our own Shannonbridge version of Fungi the Dolphin—namely “Honky” the Goose had died. Found on the Slipway. Quite a character and woke up many a boater early  looking for breakfast. Loved by many people– the Jetty Mermaids called him “Clancy” for some reason.
-By the way Shannonbridge Toilets & Showers facilities at the Jetty came in for great mention at a Rally last weekend. Top Class was the comment. Well done to all.
