PRAYER FOR CREESLOUGH
Almighty and All-loving God, we cry to you
from the darkness of grief and from the depth of
bereavement. We seek your compassion and
your embrace for the community of
Creeshlough and for individuals and families
most directly affected by Friday’s tragedy. We
ask your blessing on all who give comfort and
on all who provide support in a time when
words alone struggle to give voice to sorrow.
This we ask in the name of the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit.
The one who said thanks was a Samaritan. Auschwitz survivor, Eli Wiesel offers this insightful reflection on the subject of gratitude: ‘no one is as capable of gratitude as the one who has emerged from the kingdom of the night’. It is indeed the one who has been sick who appreciates health; the one who knew poverty who treasures wealth; the one who was incarcerated who values being free. Today’s Gospel extract is a case in point. We hear of the Samaritan leper who said thanks when he was healed by Jesus. The despised foreigner, the untouchable outsider shows gratitude. Could it be that his suffering opened the door to thankfulness? We pray for thankful hearts always, believing, in the words of American self-help author, Melody Beattie that ‘gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow’. Gratitude turns what we have into enough!

OCTOBER: MONTH OF THE MISSIONS World Mission Sunday is the Holy Father’s annual appeal to support overseas missions and missionaries. This year’s theme is ‘You Will Be My Witnesses’. World Missions was on God’s mind from the beginning and since God is a missionary God, God’s people are a missionary people. If we take mission out of the Bible we have nothing left but the covers.

Present Vocations Position:
I am sometimes asked about the present situation as regards vocations to priesthood. (How many students have we in this diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois? Answer: None) Nationally there are 39 young men studying for the Priesthood. This year 9 are beginning their studies. There are 10 in the preparatory Pre-Seminary Programme of the 26 Dioceses, there are only 4 Dioceses who have new entrants this year. 16 Dioceses have students training in Seminary. We, Ardagh & Clonmacnois have No students in training Deacons There are 31 men training as Deacons in the country at the moment. A&C diocese has 1 Deacon working in the diocese, but none in formation. Our Vocations Director Seamus O’Rourke continues to meet all interested.
