THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
‘The prayer of the humble man pierces the clouds’
The two men in today’s parable are worlds apart. The Pharisee was the model citizen, a pillar of society, law-abiding, upright, one of the ‘spiritual elite’. The Tax Collector on the other hand was despised by all, seen as corrupt, untrustworthy, the one to be avoided. When they come to the Temple to pray God ignores the externals and looks to the heart. The Pharisee is self-centred and arrogant, and there is nothing more irreligious than self-absorbed religion. He is actually praying to himself. The Tax Collector gets it right. He comes before God humble and repentant and his prayer is heard. ‘The prayer of the humble man pierces the clouds’. A parable then of two men, two prayers, two attitudes, two verdicts! One man came to brag; the other came to pray. The message is clear. No person who is proud can pray. No person who despises a fellow human being can pray. True prayer is centred on God. True prayer draws us into the mind of God. True prayer emerges from the humble heart. ‘Before a humble heart God opens His heart totally’. (Pope Francis)
The Book of Our Life One of the saddest comments of our times is that there are so many people without any purpose or goal in their lives. They free-wheel day after day but they are really adrift with no destination in mind. They are being tossed by whatever prevailing wind blows. Often their attitude is ‘why bother’. But dealt properly ‘bother’ can become positive and life enhancing. Without commitment nothing can be achieved. If we keep our hearts open to God, and to others, miracles will happen. Our hearts are where the beauty and wonder of our human spirit come alive. Often because our minds are preoccupied with present things we forget who we are. The heart is the archive of all our memories and it never forgets. Each of us carries the Book of our Life within our heart. So it is wise to tune into our heart and listen to what it whispers. The heart will never betray us because it knows that it is the storehouse of our joys, our sorrows, our successes and failures and of our sufferings. Lord God, deepen our Faith, strengthen our Hope, and enkindle our Love so that we may obtain what You promise. [Sr Abbie O’Sullivan—Extract February 2022 issue of the Far East]
CREESLOUGH This past few weeks has been the “Week of Creeslough”. We have all been part of the prayer and the pain of this last week as the parish gathered in St. Michael’s Church to lay to rest family members, neighbours and friends. Not least on Friday 14th Oct last when many gathered in solidarity in Shannonbridge at Mass led by Fr. PJ Fitzpatrick. Gratitude to all of you.
They have all become our neighbours this past week or so. Jessica, James, Catherine and her son James, Robert and his daughter Shauna, Leona, Martin , Martina and Hugh are no longer just names but people we now know with all their unique goodness and amazing gifts. Our own parish grieves especially with Hugh Gallagher and his family who’s uncle Hugh was laid to rest on Friday. A few things have struck me this past week; the grace and heroic dignity of that community personified by their priest Fr. John Joe; The Church of St. Michael’s became a focal point of the community to share this sorrow and carry that cross of pain for each other. This to me is our Church at it’s best, a place of healing, compassion and comfort. The words of 12 year old Hamish, speaking about his father James have stayed with me these past days. “We should be grateful for our family, cherish them. Be grateful because they won’t be there forever. So use up the time we have wisely. Also be grateful for your life, for that too won’t last forever. But be grateful for you will be able to rest after your hard work”. And that is our prayer that they can all rest after their hard work.

Why is it so important? All offerings made on behalf of World Mission Sunday become part of the Holy Father’s Universal Solidarity Fund. This Fund supports missionary activities in over 1,100 young dioceses, mostly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. As young dioceses grow, so do their needs. On top of this, they are often found in remote areas devastated by conflict or natural disasters. The Universal Solidarity Fund provides aid so that missionaries can continue to go to these places to share the love of God. What does it support? The needs of young dioceses vary, anything from a motorbike so a priest can celebrate Mass in a remote village, to a community hall so local people can gather in safety; or more urgently, vaccinations and medicines so that parish dispensaries can protect vulnerable children. In essence:
• it provides basic infrastructure by helping communities to build schools, clinics, parish halls and churches.
-it prepares the future leaders and carers of the Church by supporting the training of sisters, priests, brothers and catechists.
-it supports missionary programmes to care for children’s spiritual and physical wellbeing by offering safe shelter, healthcare, education and hope for the future.
What is the theme for World Mission Sunday? This year’s theme is ‘You Will Be My Witnesses’ (Acts 1: 8). Every Christian is called to be a missionary and witness to Christ. The Church, the community of Christ’s disciples, has no other mission than that of bringing the Gospel to the entire world by bearing witness to Christ. Each baptised person is called to mission, in the Church and by the mandate of the Church.
