SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
The Transfiguration
Peter, James and John thought that they knew who Jesus was, but their eyes were opened on the mountain top. In that quiet place, far from the crowd they saw Him in His glory and got a glimpse of the Promised Land that awaits us at the end of our earthly journey. Many go through life without ever ‘seeing’. That is why Lent is a season of grace, an opportunity, a time for stillness, for contemplation, for wonder, a time to look beneath the surface of our lives, to see ourselves as we really are, and to meet our God as He really is. Pope Francis has suggested that we would do well during these days to disconnect from the world of TV and smartphones and connect with the Word of God. In truth, the world is ‘crowded’ with the glory of God. What is missing is our awareness. Lord, that we may see!
Prayer for the strength to endure
O Lord, I am weary and don’t know when this “race” will end in my life. I feel like I’ve been running forever, trying to outrun this trial. Help me to stop trying to outrun my pain but rather run with endurance the race you have set before me. I know that because of you I am ultimately a victor over the trials in my life.
I know that nothing in this world can separate me from your steadfast love. Please give me a measure of your love today; give me the strength to endure this trial. Thank you for your love for me that never ends!
And thank you for the crown of joy that awaits me forever in your Kingdom! Amen
Thought for Lent:
Perhaps this coming Lent we might:
-Fast from the hurtful words that demean others and demean ourselves ever more, and speak words laced with kindness, understanding and good humour -Fast from rushing and the restless mind and take the time to slow down to rest and reflect. -Fast from the constant addiction to social media and mobile phones especially at meal times and take time to talk and to listen to people face to face. -Fast from “the long face” and take time to smile with our eyes. -Fast from what harms our body, health, mind, and cultivate a more healthy diet and lifestyle.
Fast from buying something, we do not really need and put that money into our Trócaire box for some of the poorest people in our world in Somalia, Turkey and Syria. Fast from being hard on yourself.

This is a suggested prayer that may be used over the coming weeks and months as we continue to await the appointment of a new shepherd for the diocese:
God, shepherd and guide, in your mercy, give your Church in our diocese a shepherd after
your own heart who will walk in your ways, and with loving care watch over your people.
Give us a leader of vision and a teacher of your truth.
So may your Church be built up and your name glorified;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
