THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

The Road to Emmaus

The events that occurred on the road to Emmaus and in the village itself have been described as the second celebration of the Eucharist, or ‘Mass on the Move’. The first celebration as we know took place in the Upper Room on Holy Thursday night. Now on the way to Emmaus Jesus joins Cleopas and his friend and as they walk along, He opens the Scriptures to them. This is unmistakably the Liturgy of the Word. Later, when they sit at table He takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it and distributes it to them. We see in these gestures the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Then their eyes are opened. They recognize Him and hearts that were broken, become hearts that are burning. They return to Jerusalem, filled with joy, to share their experience with the other disciples. In other words, they do what we are charged to do at the end of every Mass. The Emmaus story has universal appeal. It alerts us to the fact that we often encounter Jesus in the most unlikely places at the most unlikely times. We always need to pay attention to the stranger we meet on the road! It reminds us that we encounter Him most especially when we gather around the table of the Eucharist to listen to His word and to break bread together. If you have been to Mass, you have been to Emmaus

The Road to Emmaus If you wish to have life, Do what the disciples did on the road to Emmaus. The offered him hospitality. The Lord looked set on continuing his journey But they detained him. At the end of their journey they said to him: “Stay with us for the day is far spent.” The Lord revealed himself in the breaking of bread. Hospitality restored to them What lack of faith had taken away. So, if you wish to recognize the Saviour, Take in the stranger. Seek the Lord in the breaking of bread. St Augustine

The Road to Emmaus "We have all had difficult moments in life, dark moments in which we walked in sadness, pensive, without horizons, with only a wall before us. And Jesus is always beside us to give us hope, to warm our hearts and to say: "Go ahead, I am with you. Go ahead". The secret of the road that leads to Emmaus is simply this: despite appearances to the contrary, we continue to be loved and God will never stop loving us. God will walk with us always, always, even in the most painful moments, even in the worst moments, even in moments of defeat. That is where the Lord is. And this is our hope. Let us go forward with this hope! Because he is beside us and walks with us. Always!" Pope Francis

'In the Midst of Plenty' is a new folk musical from Enchanted Croi Theatre touring Ireland and coming to Mullingar Arts Centre (May 25th and 26th), Town Hall Cavan (May 28th) and Backstage Theatre, Longford (May 31st). The show tells the story of the desperate lengths the starving tenants on the Strokestown estate in Roscommon went to in order to survive the Great Hunger, and their exodus along what is now known as the National Famine Way. Exploring themes of Irish womanhood, family, community, and rebellion, this production peels back the curtain of antiquity surrounding the Great Hunger and presents the reality of this true story in all of its bare, heartfelt authenticity. Day of Prayer for Vocations Next Sunday is a day of Prayer for Vocations. It is the responsibility of all believing Catholics to pray for and promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This duty arises from our baptismal commitment to “go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News.” I ask all people of faith to pray the following Vocations Prayer every day this week. Heavenly Father, we ask you to send labourers into your harvest and to bless all who strive to listen to your voice. Inspire, in the hearts of men and women, vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. Bless our families with a spirit of generosity, so that those whom you call have the courage to give themselves to your Church in faith. Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Trócaire Box: Please return your Trocaire Box to the Church as soon as possible. (No need to wait until it’s full! )
