13th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones he will most certainly not lose his reward’.

It is true that the Church will always need great orators, gifted teachers and heroic saints to inspire the multitudes and carry out its mission, but it will also need ordinary folk who live graciously, love tenderly and serve generously away from the spotlight, those who welcome the stranger and offer generous hospitality in their homes. The world actually turns on the small and seemingly insignificant acts of ordinary people. It is touching that a simple act of kindness is the image chosen by Jesus in this extract from His final instruction to His disciples. The giving of a cup of cold water in His name will not go unnoticed or unrewarded. Nothing escapes His attention and all service ranks the same with Him. There is a significance to the insignificant. ‘Be great in little things’ (St. Francis Xavier).

GLEBE CEMETERY Sun 13th Aug @7

CLONIFFEEN Tues 15th Aug @ 7pm

ST.CIARAN’S CLONFANLOUGH is having a much deserved freshening up with painting, sanding & polishing parquet floors and some minor repairs. We will try to keep disruption to a minimum but trust we have your understanding if a need arises to move a Mass.

While I’m at it. Priests come & go and while I’m aware of some of the local families link to the Church by way of donating various items, I don’t know anything about the Stations of the Cross & have never seen a picture of the old Sanctuary before re-ordering in the 1970s. I know Fr. O’Hanlon had hoped to publish a small booklet on the beautiful Stained Glass Windows as well. All information would be welcome at 086 8319500

Holy Year 2025: Preparations are being made in Rome for a Holy Year in 2025. ‘HOPE IN CHRIST’ is the underlining theme for the 2025 Jubilee whose motto is ‘PILGRIMS OF HOPE’. Information can be found on the Jubilee website www.iubilaeum2025.va. Also from September social media pages and the new Jubilee App, www.iubilaeum2025, will be officially active and accessible. The app, which will be downloaded for iOs and Android, will allow users to access all the news already on the website, but also make it easier and faster to register for Jubilee events, with the option of receiving personalised information.

Vocations: This year we celebrate Year of Vocations to Diocesan priesthood. We are all aware of the crisis in our Parishes at the present time. Killaloe diocese has 27 of their 58 parishes with no priest under 75 years of age.  Clonfert clergy have an average age of 79!  We face a cliff edge situation with a number of men in precarious health & parishes being covered generously by neighbouring ones and about My brother priest and fellow parishioner Fr. PJ Fitzpatrick holds the title of the only native Offaly priest serving in Ardagh & Clonmacnois. I’m sure he and I would like to pass that mantle over!

I’m sometimes accused of being negative on this, but the facts are these: there are 44 diocesan priests working in our 40 parishes. (include 4 priests who are here on loan). By 2025, 8 priests will be over 75 leaving 37 diocesan priests under retirement age. By 2030, 20 priests will be over 75 leaving 25 diocesan priests under retirement age. So far we have no students. We desperately need active parishioners and I often hear the “older” parishioners wonder aloud who will replace them. The same problem I imagine applies to groups like the GAA and Youth Clubs.

We need priests. If there is anyone out there who at some stage considered Priesthood and bypassed it, perhaps now is the time to re-consider the option of Priesthood in your life. Priesthood is an enriching, fulfilling life and I recommend it to anyone considering their option in life. If interested or questioning contact Fr. Seamus O’Rourke, 071-9620118  me or any priest in The Diocese to discuss and analyse your questioning.

Year of Vocations God our Father, send workers into your harvest. May the Spirit we received in baptism Touch the hearts of many To offer themselves in priesthood, religious life, and other forms of service. Give the parents and families of our diocese The wisdom and courage to support young people In searching for and following the call of God in their lives

Holidays: We wish all our young schoolchildren who have just begun their summer holidays a happy and safe holiday. We wish their teachers every best wishes on their deserved break & look forward to their return in September. We are lucky in our Parish to have such a committed & dedicated bunch of teachers & we thank them for their initiative& assiduousness
