St. Ciaran as depicted in St. Finian's Church, Clonard

From my desk…. Fr. Tom writes

As I shortly take my leave of you after 8 years in Clonmacnois Parish, I would like to say a very big Thank  you” to each and every one of you. You helped me to feel at home in so many ways, as we marked days of joy and sorrow. So many people have helped and worked so hard alongside me for the good of our  parish of Clonmacnois. I appreciate each one of you. It’s impossible to name you all. . I’m sorry for any hurt that I may have caused and hope that we can move forward in faith, hope and love.  I’ve been blessed in  my friends and family. My siblings Maeve, Cath     y, Antoinette, Helen and Tony had wonderful parents in Anthony & Maura Cox.

When Bishop Paul told me of a move on June 28th, I have been all over the place in myself and find this very hard. But it is p art of our life as  a priest and as I’ve often said  in recent weeks- if I had said “no” to either Bishop O’Reilly, Bishop Duffy or Bishop Connell-  I would never have had the blessing  and privilege of meeting you in this  this parish for the past 8 years, Ferbane for 7year, Longford for 8 and Athlone for 10 years. . My most cherished unofficial title  in all 4 parish  moves was colleagues jokingly calling me the “Abbot of Clonmacnois” (I think it was the sandals?!)  I will remember you in my North Roscommon parish of Kilronan and know that we will keep each other in the heart of prayer. I will miss my West Offaly colleagues Fr. Peter Burke, Fr. Brendan O’Sullivan, Fr. Reji, Fr. Pat Kiernan, Fr. Michael Morris, Fr. PJ Fitzpatrick, Fr.. Pat Brown & Fr. Michael Scanlon.

I am glad that I have been replaced by a priest like Fr. Alanga, as like many priests we dread the day when we move and there are no replacements. Pray for vocations please. I have been quite happy as  a priest I feel- it’s a beautiful l life!  A piece I came across from Pope St. John XXIII came into my hand as I sorted files.. It seems appropriate“Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern not yourself with what you tried and failed in, but what it is still possible to do. Now is the time to put aside past and present setbacks &failures & look with confidence to the new day called tomorrow.”

ST. BERNADETTE OF LOURDES - Next month the Relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes will be taken to Ireland to visit each diocese. In our own diocese the relics will be in St. Mel’s Cathedral on Fri. 27th and Sat. 28th Sept. The purpose of this visit is to Bring Lourdes to the Faithful. In other words, to help those who may not be able to travel to Lourdes themselves, to share in some of the atmosphere of prayer and consolation that pilgrims experience, while they are there. This will be an opportunity to gather together and join in the Message of St Bernadette

This Week We Offer A Special Prayer Of ....Thanks to all our Olympic Athletes Dear God, thank you for the opportunity to enjoy watching some of the world’s top athletes compete in their sports. They used their passion and dedication to bring joy to many people. May they inspire those who watched, to discover, develop, and use their own talents to the fullest. Help the Olympians to continue to be positive role models for a hurting world that needs to harness the joy and inspiration that came from the Olympics. Bless the athletes who all did their best to contribute to the world, and let their efforts point us all toward you God, the source of all hope. Amen
