GAA News from Jason Mahon

Division 1 football league
Shannonbridge 1-09 Rhode 0-09
On Saturday evening last, Shannonbridge impressively overcame county champions Rhode by a goal. Superior fitness told in the end as Rhode, minus their county stars, wilted in the second half. Indeed it was a different story in the first half, as Rhode raced into a 6 points to no-score lead after 15 minutes.
A superb goal from Dermot Turley (1-01) brought the bridge back into it however, and Rhode led 0-07 to 1-03 at the interval.
Shannonbridge came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half though, with Jason Kelly, much welcomed back from injury, leading by example in the centre of the park, and Fergal McEvoy (0-06) also impressing.
Declan Kelly in goal made two stunning saves in the game, denying certain goal scoring opportunities. Mel Darcy in defence had a particularly good game & worked hard throughout the 60 minutes.

Next up for Shannonbridge is Clara in division 1 of the football league on Saturday next at 7pm. It must be noted that we’ve now clocked up 3 major scalps in recent weeks, defeating Ferbane, Shamrocks & now Rhode since we were defeated by Gracefield in the first round of the championship. With the championship due to resume in a couple of weeks following Offaly’s disappointing loss to Dublin on Sunday, hopefully Shannonbridge will take their very impressive league form with them.

Shannonbridge music festival.
Shannonbridge GAA was one of the sponsors for this year’s music festival, which was held in Shannonbridge last weekend. It proved to be a huge success attracting visitors from near and far.

George Bernard Shaw is perhaps most renowned as a free thinker and liberal philosopher. In his last writings we read, “The science to which I pinned my faith is bankrupt. Its counsels, which should have established the millennium, led, instead, directly to the suicide of Europe. I believed them once. In their name I helped to destroy the faith of millions of worshippers in the temples of a thousand creeds. And now they look at me and witness the great tragedy of an atheist who has lost his faith!” (Source unknown)

Shannonbridge Fishing Report …Dated 5th June 2007

Weather was a little less windy than of late and sunny on occasion.

River level is still low.

- Alf Appleby from Doncaster fished the Hot Water stretch on a windy

27th May and used maggot and sweetcorn to catch five tench.

Best was over 6 lbs and the others all over 4 lbs. Load of rudd and roach

made for enjoyable day.

- Ashley Adams from Cannock fished a Backwater on a rainy windy 30th May

and used 3 or 4 red maggot on a size 16 hook to catch roach / bream hybrids for

a bag of 15 lbs 13 Ozs. Best fish 1 lb 4 Ozs. Enjoyable day in the rain and wind.

- Russell Adams from Cannock recorded two catches. On 30th May he fished a Backwater. He cut out a new swim and used a waggler and caster / maggot to

catch 11 roach / bream hybrids that weighed 9 lbs.

Next day he fished the River Suck at Correen Ford on a sunny showery day

And used triple red maggot with a waggler to catch 25 roach and skimmers

that weighed 10 lbs. Like many other anglers Russell found that at 2.00 pm

they went off the feed.

- Local angler Aidan Kelly noticed what he thought was a tench in the water

where he generally moors his boat. On June 1st in fine weather he proved he was correct.

Fishing with worms on the float, Aidan caught four tench between 5 lbs and 3.5 lbs.

Why not ask Aidan where he moors his boat.

-Andy Leatherbarrow from Culcheth fished at Correen Ford on June 1st and used

maggot and worm with a feeder to catch 16 good fish. Fished good early on.

- Mary Reeves from Bath records that 28th May was sunny and warm when she fished the Boora Lake where she caught a 4.75 lbs tench with maggot.

- Terry Norris from Bath records that on a warm and windy 29th May he fished the

Grand Canal from midday to 6.00pm using maggot to catch 8 tench and roach.

- Helmi Huber from Munich on a windy June 2nd fished for pike with a jointed wobbler

and caught two pike. Best one measured 1.04 Metres (R.I.P.) and the smaller one was returned alive. He did not know the rules about killing big pike.

- Madeleine Davis from Dublin fished a Backwater near Shannonbridge on June 3rd

on a nice evening which was fine and dark. Using maggot and sweetcorn she had a fine 18 lbs collection of five bream, best 2.5 lbs, plus roach perch and rudd. Fished until

2.00 am.

- Louise Killeen also fished the Backwater and enjoyed a good evening /night fishing.

Louise caught six bream to 3.5 lbs, roach to 1 lb and rudd. Later it got dark and cold. Stopped fishing at 2.00 am.

The Eckert family from Wurzburg in Germany are starting their holiday cruising on the River Shannon. On 4th June 9 year old Celine Ecker fished with a wobbler near Clonmacnois and caught her first pike measuring 60 cm. Her 6 years old sister, Ayleen Eckert fished at Clonmacnois to catch her first fish, a 30 cm perch using a worm.

- Regular visitors to Shannonbridge The Crompton Brothers have arrived. Nothing of note so far except Michael caught a 5.5 lbs tench fishing on 4th June. Memories of them catching 34 fine tench a couple of years ago when sharing the same swim using about a dozen red maggot on a Size 10 hook.
