GAA News from Jason Mahon

Division 1 football league
Shannonbridge 1-09 Rhode 0-09
On Saturday evening last, Shannonbridge impressively overcame county champions Rhode by a goal. Superior fitness told in the end as Rhode, minus their county stars, wilted in the second half. Indeed it was a different story in the first half, as Rhode raced into a 6 points to no-score lead after 15 minutes.
A superb goal from Dermot Turley (1-01) brought the bridge back into it however, and Rhode led 0-07 to 1-03 at the interval.
Shannonbridge came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half though, with Jason Kelly, much welcomed back from injury, leading by example in the centre of the park, and Fergal McEvoy (0-06) also impressing.
Declan Kelly in goal made two stunning saves in the game, denying certain goal scoring opportunities. Mel Darcy in defence had a particularly good game & worked hard throughout the 60 minutes.

Next up for Shannonbridge is Clara in division 1 of the football league on Saturday next at 7pm. It must be noted that we’ve now clocked up 3 major scalps in recent weeks, defeating Ferbane, Shamrocks & now Rhode since we were defeated by Gracefield in the first round of the championship. With the championship due to resume in a couple of weeks following Offaly’s disappointing loss to Dublin on Sunday, hopefully Shannonbridge will take their very impressive league form with them.

Shannonbridge music festival.
Shannonbridge GAA was one of the sponsors for this year’s music festival, which was held in Shannonbridge last weekend. It proved to be a huge success attracting visitors from near and far.
