TIME OF VIGIL MASS IN SHANNONBRIDGE
Next Saturday, 5th October we plan to gather your views on what time our Vigil Mass should be. The general feeling falls with a mass time or 7p.m. or 7:30p.m. Most feel a seasonal moving mass time would cause confusion

Sacramental Enrolment The young people making their First Penance, First Communion and Confirmation are being enrolled on Saturday, October 5th during the 6:30p.m. Mass in St. Kieran’s, Church, Shannonbridge. This is the start of a process of preparation guided by their parents, their teachers and the parish community. All three pillars of influence have a very important part play in the faith formation of our young people. Personal example and true witness are the greatest influence in any young person’s life
The rich man and Lazarus The sin of the rich man in today’s Gospel is
the sin of omission. It’s not that he did something wrong. He just did nothing. His wealth blinded him to the fact that a poor man lay at his gate. His indifference calls to mind the age-old adage: ‘to close one’s heart is to begin to die; to open one’s heart is to begin to live’. It is not without significance that the poor man Lazarus is the only person to be named in all the parables of Jesus. The poor are always close to His heart. We had better take notice. We are indeed called to be our brother’s and our sister’s keepers. In a world where a child dies from malnutrition every two seconds the image of the parable should disturb us. The poor are still at the gate. How we treat them will determine the kind of welcome we will receive at another gate!

40 years on from September 30th 1979 There was only a week to go when confirmation of a short visit by Pope John Paul II (described as “private” to Clonmacnois was made. Despite efforts to dissuade people, estimates of the time say 15,000 people converged on Clonmacnois to greet the Papal Helicopter at 9:30am. From 3am That morning. Local estimates are much higher. Some of you reading this remember the day vividly– other weren’t even born! Report of the time say.
"By 3am the big build-up began, with cars, bicycles and pedestrians converging on Clonmacnoise from the Shannonbridge, Athlone and Ferbane roads." Fr. O’Lehane in the “Shannonbridge Star” (!) pointed out that for him the Holy Father was saying to us “Go back to your roots– they were sound.” Gardaí were out in force.
When the Pope arrived, he was flanked by Cardinals O'Fiach and Carroll and Bishop Marcinkus, and greeted by Bishop Cahal Daly. Bishop Daly described it later as the "happiest day of his life".
The Pope visited an open-air oratory where he venerated St Manchan's Shrine and other diocesan relics.
From there he went up the hill, stopped to examine the Cross of the Scriptures, before coming to view on a specially prepared platform where he addressed the huge gathering
Before leaving he blessed a yew tree which was later planted in Clonmacnois and was presented with a replica of the Papal Crozier, made of an alloy of metals from Clonmacnois.
A year later in 1980 while receiving an Irish Group he gave these remarks. "I will never forget that place, in which we stopped for a short time, in the early morning hours, on Sunday September 30: Clonmacnois. The ruins of the monastery & of the churches speak of the life that once pulsated there...It is difficult to look on these ruins merely as a monument of the past: whole generations of Europe owe to them the light of the Gospel & the structural framework of their culture. These ruins are still charged with a great mission, they still constitute a challenge”
