THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR ‘
The prayer of the humble man pierces the clouds’
The two men in today’s parable are worlds apart. The Pharisee was the model citizen, a pillar of society, law-abiding, upright, one of the ‘spiritual elite’. The Tax Collector on the other hand was despised by all, seen as corrupt, untrustworthy  hy, the one to be avoided. When they come to the Temple to pray God ignores the externals and looks to the heart. The Pharisee is self-centred and arrogant, and there is nothing more irreligious than self-absorbed religion. He is actually praying to himself. The Tax Collector gets it right. He comes before God humble and repentant and his prayer is heard. ‘The prayer of the humble man pierces the clouds’. The message is clear. No person who is proud can pray. No person who despises a fellow human being can pray. True prayer is centred on God, and offered to God alone

Prayer when visiting a Cemetery: May God’s perpetual light shine upon the faces of our loved ones who rest here. May the lives they lived in our homes continue to inspire and to g   uide us on the way. May the memories we carry and share in stories, keep them part of our lives and part of our family. May each time we visit, walk, sit, pray and listen here bring us closer to the heart of God’s kindness. May the Angel’s guide them, the Saint’s protect them and the prayer of Mary hold them in the light. May God raise them up on eagle’s wings, bear them on the breath of dawn, Make them shine like the sun, And forever hold them safe and free in the palm of His hand.                                                                    NOVEMBER INDULGENCES1. From 12 noon on 1st Nov until midnight on 2nd Nov, all who have confessed, received Holy Communion and prayed for the pope’s intentions (one Our Father and Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one’s choice) can gain one plenary indulgence by visiting a church or oratory, and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostle’s Creed. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls of the departed.
2. The faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the Holy Souls on the usual conditions once per day from 1st to 8th Nov. The conditions mentioned above apply also for this.

A Prayer for Hallowe’en:
God of laughter and joy, keep our children safe as they embark on the revels this Hallowe’en. Light their way through the dark night and enfold them in your love. May the real treat in their lives be grace that multiplies in depth and breadth as they grow older. We pray this with all the saints in heaven. Amen.
