FEASTDAYS FOR COMING WEEK

Mon July 29th Feast of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus who welcomed Jesus to their home. Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words & later Jesus resurrected Lazarus

Wed. 31st July. St. Ignatius of Loyala 1491 -1556 founded the society of Jesus, the Jesuits. His great theme was the service of God and God’s greater Glory. The experience of his conversion led to his writing of the Spiritual Excercises.

Thurs August 1st St. Alphonsus of Liguori Fri Aug. 2nd The indulgence of St.Mary of the Portincula Father, we honour the glorious memory of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels, we ask that by the help of her prayers we too may come to share the fullness of your grace. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son.Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly… This Sunday, July 28th, is World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. The date is chosen because it is the closest Sunday to the feast of Saints Joachim and Ann, the parents of Our Lady: the grandparents of Jesus. This is a celebration that was inaugurated by Pope Francis in 2021, and offers us an important reminder of the importance of the role that grandparents and the elderly play in our communities. And that role is, simply put, immense. There was a time when to be over 70 meant not only to be old, but also possibly in ill health. That is, thankfully, no longer the case. Increasingly, people are enjoying good health into their 80s and even their 90s. The active lifestyles of our older people, and their tremendous energy, are things that would not have been familiar in our society even 30 years ago. And thank God that such is the case. Without that energy we would be much, much poorer

Bishops’ pastoral letter ‘Freedom to Live Fully, Until Death Comes’ and ‘Through the Valley’ video “Every human person possesses an infinite dignity, inalienably grounded in his or her very being, which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situa      on the person may ever encounter.” With that in mind, the Bishops of Ireland wish to invite people to consider once again some of the essential elements of the Church’s teaching on care at the end of life. Please see link below catholicbishops.ie/2024/06/24/bishops-statement-onend-of-life-care-freedom-to-live-fully-until-death-comes/

Prayer for the Victims and Survivors of Sexual Abuse Heavenly Father, who loves and cares for all of your children, especially the smallest and most vulnerable, we entrust to you the lives of the many children and vulnerable adults, who have been sexually abused, and whose trust and innocence have been destroyed. Help us to hear their cries of pain and to take responsibility for so many broken lives. We pray that within their communities and families they may find understanding and support so that with the help of your grace their wounds may be healed, and they may again know peace. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who shared our weakness in all things but sin, and lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit forever and ever

REEK SUNDAY This weekend when people climb the Holy mountain of Croagh Patrick . St. Patrick climbed this holy mountain and prayed and fasted there. This tradition of climbing mountains and high places is older than St. Patrick. It was believed that the sacred dwelled in these high places. This search for the sacred is a journey that all of us have to make individually. Masses on the Summit of the mountain hourly from 9am to 2pm. Confessions will be heard from 7:30am - 2pm

FEASTDAYS FOR COMING WEEK

Monday 22nd July—St. Mary Magdalene St. Mary Magdalene stood by the Cross of Jesus; with two other women she discovered the empty tomb; she was granted an appearance of the Risen Lord early the dame day, from which incident she has been described as ‘the apostle to the apostles’. Later she founded the Bridgettine Order and lived in Rome. She wrote many works about her mystical experiences. She died in Rome in 1373. She was declared a patron of Europe in 2000. Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois.

Diocesan Changes 2024.

On September 1st 2016 I began a 5 year appointment as Administrator of this parish. Due to Covid and a change of Bishop those 5 years became 8 happily!  However as of Friday, July 12th last Bishop Paul Connell confirmed that he wishes me to take on as Parish Priest of Kilronan Parish beginning August 24th. . It’s in North Roscommon right on the Leitrim border, adjoining Drumshanbo. My Clonmacnois Predecessor Fr. Sam Holmes was there in 2008 and my Ferbane parish predecessor Fr. Sean Tynan also.  It will be very new to me after 15 years in West Offaly. I don’t know anyone there. I thank  you for  your patience, courtesy and immense help and ask that you simply pray for me . I have known Fr. Alanga who comes here in my place since 2006 and he is my friend. A very good, humble man. He is on a break for a year from Pankshin, Northern Nigeria.  We are so lucky to have him in this parish as  a glance at the following appointments will show that a further 3 parishes are without a a resident priest making it 6 out of 41 in that situation. With a further five served by men over 75 years of age.

Fr Patrick Lennon, PP Dromard to retire.

Fr Cathal Faughnan, PP Kilronan, (Keadue, Arigna & Ballyfarnan) to retire.

Fr Tom Cox, Adm Clonmacnois, appointed PP Kilronan, (Keadue, Arigna & Ballyfarnan).

Fr. Peter Burke, PP Ferbane appointed also Adm. Clonmacnois, Shannonbridge & Clonfanlough.

Fr. Michael Alanga, Diocese of Pankshin, Nigeria to be CC Clonmacnois, Shannonbridge & Clonfanlough.

Fr Simon Cadam, PP Granard appointed also Adm. Abbeylara.

Fr. P. J. Hughes, PP Mullahoran &Loughduff appointed PP Dromard.

Fr. Joe McGrath, CC Mount Temple appointed Adm. Mullahoran.

Fr. Reji Kurian, CC Ballinahown appointed CC Moate & Mount Temple.

Fr. Charlie Healy, PP Carrickedmond & Abbeyshrule appointed CC St. Mary’s Athlone.

Fr. Liam Murray, PP Ballymahon appointed also Adm. Carrickedmond &; Abbeyshrule.

Fr. Vincent Connaughton, PP Ardagh & Moydow appointed also Adm. Legan.

16th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

‘You must come away to some lonely place’

Jesus invites His friends to come aside to a lonely place to rest a while. He understood the importance of having rhythm and balance in life. He was teaching them that no fruitful work is possible without the practice of solitude. If they are to journey out to others they must first make the journey inwards to regain their perspective and recharge their spirit. Solitude is the ordeal that gives us the right to speak. Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary General of the United Nations extolled the necessity of solitude in these memorable words: ‘Speak only outof silence; act only out of stillness’. It is out of silence and solitude that worship springs. The cultivation of a healthy silence is of the essence if the celebration of the Eucharist

on the Lord’s Day is to have meaning. The ‘little encounters’ during the week prepare the ground for the ‘great encounter’ on the ‘Day of the Sun’. These ‘little encounters’ or ‘minute vacations’ can happen over a cup of coffee in the early morning or in a quiet corner of the house when the family has gone to bed. The important thing is to find that sanctuary place each day where God canspeak to the heart. God is the friend of silence.‘You can hear the footsteps of God when silence reigns in the mind’.

EXTRACT FROM PASTORAL LETTER  from Bishop Paul... The model of church we have at present cannot continue. We simply do not have the numbers of priests and religious necessary to sustain it. There has been and will be a continual decline in the number of our full time priests and religious and the reality is that in the very near future your parish may not have a resident priest, or if you have, then your priest may be called upon to provide pastoral care in a neighbouring parish that does not have.
