14th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

 ‘A prophet is despised

only in his own country’

Jesus is rejected in his own town. A carpenter is a carpenter surely! We know all about his family! How could one of our own possibly have such wisdom? It’s a familiar story. We tend to look to far away hills for inspiration while the treasure is under our feet. God is present in the everyday. His face shines through ordinary people. His voice is heard in unlikely places. ‘There is a divine message in everything’. We would do well to take a second look at those closest to us. There is more to them than meets the eye. How did Jesus react to being rejected by His own people? He didn’t castigate His listeners. He didn’t rant or rail. He didn’t force His message on anyone. He simply withdrew quietly and took His message to another region. The preacher depends on the disposition of the congregation. There can be no preaching to hearts that are closed. If people decide that they won’t understand, they won’t understand. We can either help or hinder the work of Jesus Christ. We can open the door wide to Him or we can shut it in His face. It is interesting to note the sequel to this unpleasant episode. After His rejection Jesus never returned to Nazareth again!

FEASTDAYS FOR COMING WEEK

Monday 8 July: St. Kilian was born in the parish of Mullagh in the diocese of Kilmore. With eleven companions he left Ireland and became known as the apostle of Thuringia and eastern Franconia. With Kolonat and Tatnan he was put to death in 689. There is a very strong devotion to him in Wurzburg, where his remains lie, and also throughout the Bavarian countryside.

Tuesday 9 July: Ss. Augustine Zhao Rong. Thursday 11 July: St. Benedict., c. 480—547, after living as a hermit at Subiaco, founded the monastery of Monte Cassino. His Rule, observed by Benedictines and Cistercians, is distinguished by its wisdom & balance& those who lived by it did much to shape the Europe of today. Named patron of Europe in 1964.

Some inspiring quotes from St Benedict (1)Run while you have the light of life, lest the darkness of death overtake you” (2) “Be careful to be gentle, lest in removing the rust, you break the whole instrument”!!!

Every Day may not be good– but there’s something good in every day!

Holiday Prayer Loving Lord, as we prepare to leave for our journey, we pray for travelling mercies over land and sea, and place ourselves under your protective care. Be with us as we set out for our holiday, and we ask that you would keep us safe every step of the way, as we journey to our destination. Go ahead of our route we pray, and we ask that you would prevent any unnecessary hindrances or delays on our travel arrangements. Guard us from the evil one we pray, and stand guard over our home when we are away. Father, into your hands we commend ourselves and place our lives, our journey and our home into your safe keeping. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen. www.prayer.knowing-jesus.com/Prayers-for-healing

A Blessing

The world is now too dangerous

and too beautiful for anything but love.

May your eyes be so blessed you see God in everyone.

Your ears, so you hear the cry of the poor.

May your hands be so blessed

that everything you touch is a sacrament

your lips, so you speak nothing but the truth with

love.

May your feet be so blessed you run

to those who need you.

And may your heart be so opened,

so set on fire, that your love,

your love, changes everything

GLENSTAL PRAYER Drive away the darkness that surrounds me, spread around me the Mantle of your Light. Help me to know your Will and give me the courage to do it. (Prayer said at 5.45 p.m. each day in Glenstal Abbey)

PATRON SAFE OF TRAVEL SAFETY O Glorious, St. Christopher you inherited a beautiful name, Christ-bearer, as a result of the wonderful legend that while carrying people across a raging stream, you also carried the Child Jesus. Teach us to be true Christ-bearers to those who do not know him. Protect all of us who travel both near and far and petition Jesus to remain with us always. Amen         VAKS is an opportunity for young people in TY, 5th and 6th year to come to Knock Shrine to volunteer for a weekend in either July or August. This is a great way to meet new friends, serve others, express your faith and have fun! If you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mairead Jennings at 094 937 5321 or your local parish priest.
