Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. Recently at a wedding in another church everybody was invited to take communion. But at a Catholic wedding the priest at the start said that only practising Catholics should receive. Isn’t this rather narrow-minded and hurtful? A. Catholic belief is that receiving the Lord in the Blessed Eucharist is the greatest privilege of our religion. The Catholic Church will not water down this doctrine and safeguards it with certain regulations: the recipient must be baptised and not in the state of mortal sin. A period of fasting is recommended as a mark of respect. By upholding these regulations we let others know how sacred the Blessed Eucharist is in our religion.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report....dated 26th October 2010
The level of the river at Shannonbridge today is 2.67 metres.
There are a number of what are called non-national anglers
fishing the waters at Shannonbridge but it is difficult
to find out what they caught.Yesterday one of those purchased
six wire traces used for pike fishing in the afternoon.
On enquiring had he caught many fish he replied 'No Fish, No Fish',
>Ten year old Jonois Kersken from Dusseldorf fished the Shannon on
17th October using worm on a fine day to catch three perch.Released.
>On 21/10 Jord v Zelst from Holland who is also ten years old
fished the Shannon on a fine day using float and maggot to catch
ten roach which were also released.
>David Mullee from Kilteel fished at Shannonbridge on 5th October
David used a spinner and caught and released a pike weighing 20 lbs.
Good to see English anglers Derek and Mike visiting Shannonbridge
for the weekend.

Questions people ask Q. Every year I have this problem on Mission Sunday. Who gave Christians or any other religion the right to impose their beliefs on other people? A. It was Jesus Christ who sent out his followers to proclaim his message by lifestyle and word to people of every nation and time. If your concern is about people’s rights, then remember that people have the right to know the truth about Jesus Christ who came to teach and save all people. Anybody who appreciates God’s love and mercy as revealed in Jesus Christ would want all people to share this belief and hope.

Earn Self-Esteem (Dr. Lynn Scoresby)
"You cannot give your child self-esteem. Your child’s self-esteem will not ‘grow in proportion to the attention or presents lavished on her,’ according to educational therapist Lawrence J. Greene in 1001 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Schoolwork. ‘She will have to earn her self-esteem by solving her own problems, overcoming challenges and dealing with setbacks and failures. She will earn it with her own hard work and perseverance. She will learn to appreciate herself as she develops her talents and experiences her power.’"

On 14/10 Pip used the same methods to catch a pike weighing 10.5 lbs again on a fine day.Pip was glad to beat the Missus this year at fishing.
>Mick Walsh from Durrow County Laois recorded two catches. On 13/10 on a dull fine day he used a mackerel as bait while trolling on the Shannon and caught a pike weighing 20 lbs 5 ounces which was returned alive after been weighed on his certified weighing scales. This was just over the Specimen Weight for pike at 20 lbs.
On 17/10Mick Walsh fished the River Suck from his boat again using mackerel bait to catch a 10 lbs pike.
>Graham from Tadley England is over for a short fishing holiday. On 18/10 he fished at Banagher and caught 25 lbs of roach using caster/maggot.All caught on the stick float.
An article in the paper recently had a photograph of Longford Cathedral with a temporary roof fitted. There was a bad fire in the Cathedral about last Christmas.Bishop O Reilly was announcing that the walls were secure but work on the inside may take four years to complete.Meanwhile Bishop O Reilly has named Saint Mary's Church as the Cathedral for the diocese in the meantime. Saint Mary's Church in Athlone has connections with Shannonbridge.

Brigie Cassidy was in Shannonbridge on Sunday for the Anniversary Mass for Mary Burke(3 years) and Martin Burke(4 years).Brigie told us that the last Parish Priest in Saint Mary's was a Father Kilroe who was born in Shannonbridge and was her great grand uncle. He went to America to collect funds to help build Saint Mary's.After it was built the church became one of the Diocesan church and the Parish Priest was replaced by an Administrator

Lily Lestrange Charlestown died on 13th October 1946 aged 72 years and is buried in the family plot in Clonmacnois close to O'Rourke's Tower.Lily was a sister of the late Dan and Martin Lestrange. She had one sister that married Redmond Kerins from Cloghan.

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday
"Two thousand years since the start of Mission, there are still vast geographical, cultural, human and social areas which have not yet been penetrated by Christ and his Gospel" (Pope John Paul).
Support the proclamation of the Gospel message by prayer, offering of suffering and generous financial contribution.
In his letter for Mission Sun Pope Benedict wrote: “Proclaiming the Gospel belongs to the entire Church, as the Church is missionary by its very nature.”
The money raised by the Universal Church on Mission Sun is made available, in its entirety, through the Universal Fund to the poorest & neediest missions.
¨¨¨¨
Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn - Intercom ) Q. If God can read our inmost hearts and already knows our secret thoughts, why must we use words to pray? A. God does not need our words but in many instances it’s we who need words to focus our attention, to clarify our thoughts and help us to persevere. The effort to find our own words, or using prayers known by heart or prayers such as the Psalms or the Lord’s Prayer draw us into the world of prayer. Words are not always needed and may even get in the way of silent pondering. Saint Paul wrote that the Spirit within us can express our pleas in ways that could never be put into words (Romans 8:26).

On 12th October Moralba and Maldonado Brito from Venezuela
stopped off in Shannonbridge after visiting Clonmacnois.
Maldonado had travelled from Venezuela to Ireland and
linked up with her sister Moralba who works in Paris.
They are spending eight days driving around Ireland
before returning to Paris where Maldonado plans to stay
for three weeks before returning home.
In Venezuela the Family name is a combination of both
parents when they get married.
They have no family connections with Ireland and just
chose to spend some time here.In Venezuela some 90%
of the population are Catholic.
The sisters have been blessed with great weather for
their holiday.

Cousin Annie has a 92 year old golfing friend in America who greets the day with
"Thank the Lord I'm on the right side of the grass this morning".

Today a Mr and Mrs Mc Carten from Brisbane stopped by in Shannonbridge to see the river bridge on their way to Clonmacnois.Mr Mc Carten told us that his family were in the shipping business collecting scrap metal from Belfast.A search of one telephone book showed about six entries for his name based mostly around Ballyshannon in County Donegal. He told us that in Brisbane there was a well known man named Michael Killeen living there.

Last week 28 people from the small German town Hundstruck Brau came on holiday on the River Shannon. They hired six cruisers with half starting from Portumna and the other half starting from Carrick on Shannon.Mid week they met and stayed overnight in Shannonbridge.
They all wore jackets with "Rautour 2010".Ingole Hess told that he has holidayed in Ireland 125 times. He has a collection of some 300 books on Ireland and he told us that he is a friend of Lobo from Beckenfert whose hobby is making clocks from slate.

Shannonbridge has a population of near 100 crows and jackdaws. Today Mick Killeen got the impression that one of the birds had optained sponsorship as it landed in the pub yard and caught a Tayto Cheese and Onion crisp bag in its mouth and flew away. It was careful to leave the Tayto bag hanging down for all and sundry to view as it went off for a snack.

This weeks Offaly Independent tells us that the Google Photographic map of Offaly Goes Live with the launch of Google Street View.It uses digital photography taken last year to create a panorama effect.Unfortunately it had no details of how to get to the site but have fun in the search.

Shannonbridge Church is in its second week of inside decoration and all is going nicely.
We even have our own version of moving statues as the painter reaches different areas.

Met a German visitor with the unusual name of Heinz who told us that he was a friend of Harry Rowald the writer.Heinz was in Shannonbridge in 1986 and he reminded me that then I had my head wrapped in a bandage. At that time he asked me what had happened my head and I told him that the doctor had bored a hole in my head and found nothing and put the bandage around it.Heinz visited again on 3rd October travelling by car.

Taughmaconnell Heritage and Historical Society are unveiling a Memorial Bust to the late Governor John G.Downey on Friday 15th October in Taughmaconnell village.Governor Downey was the 7th Governor of California State and was a a native of the parish of Taughmaconnell.

The Bainisteoir football match on RTE on Sunday c6.30 should show lots of interesting views of the area as the cameras visited Clonmacnois etc some days before the match.

Michael Kelly from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne England, son of Peter Kelly, who was a butcher in Shannonbridge is over for the Ballinasloe Fair.Michael went to school in Shannonbridge and is a brother of Katherine and Rita.Michael has some good memories of life in Shannonbridge and tells us that he plans to write them down and send them to this website.

Also around tor the opening of the Fair last weekend was Eamon Lyons and family from County Down.Eamon is a brother of Tony and Noel who live in Kilcock and of Gerry Lyons who lives in Boston USA.

Saturday 2nd October the well known German visitor known around Shannonbridge as Rheinhart arrived on his Silverline Cruiser with his sisters Uschib and Gerlinde for a week on the river.Rheinhart has been visiting this area for well over thirty years. This year as usual he took some of his closest friends for trips on the river. His sister Gerlinde is fond of walking and was enquiring from John in the tourist office today about walking the Grand Canal from Dublin to Shannonharbour and any other walkways.
Friend of Rheinhart Martin Rosster was also on the river this week with some friends and met up with Rheinhart.Martin is well known locally as he was one of the group of friends that bought The Walsh Home in Clonfinlough many years ago and visits regularly by land.

The Irish Catholic newspaper www.irishcatholic.ie recently featured Parishes in County Offaly.Their next edition had a number of photographs taken at the blessing and opening of the new playground in Shannonbridge locatated on the field next the church and on the mouth of the road to the Power Station.

Recently I noticed a lorry driver park his lorry alongside the new playground and visit the Church for a few minutes. One morning I met him coming out from the Church and enquired who he was.He told me that his name was Daithi Healy and he had delivered a load of sand to the Power Station.Daithi works for Paddy Murphy Trucks in Macroom and he has got into the practise of saying a prayer and lighting a candle before commencing the homeward journey of some 130 miles.Well done Daithi.
Fishing Report Shannonbridge ...dated 8th October 2010
The river level today on Shannonbridge gauge reads 3.5 metres.Floodwater has gone from most of the land beside the river.Weather has been good with many days of sun and wind and the river has been flowing fast. But there is still lots of water in the river.
>Bill Lanmert from Banbury fished at Shannonharbour on 1st/10 with wind and showers using a maggot and feeder to catch 30lbs of bream, roach and rudd.Six bream were 3.5 lbs each, and six rudd and six rudd all weighed about 12 ounces each.
>Tony Chard Banbury fished alongside Bill and used maggot and feeder to catch 18 lbs of hybrids and skimmers.Best fish weighed 1.5lbs.

> Ralph Hoiky fished Shannonharbour on 1st/10 in sun and rain using maggot and feeder to catch 24 lbs of roach and hybrids.
>BisQil Frant from Austria fished at Clonmacnois on 7/10 using a gummie fish to catch a 97cm pike which was returned alive. He celebrated on a Cuban cigar.
>Terry Dawson and his son Andrew are again visiting the area, but this time by cruiser.
On the morning of 7/10 Terry and Andrew reported that the bay upstream from the bridge at Shannonbridge was alive with fish topping. The day was sunny and windy and they chose a bay on the Such near the mouth of the river.Using maggot and feeder they fished the opposite bank with little result. Then Andrew suggested that they fish near their boat. The fish were there and they caught 38 lbs of roach/bream hybrids. Will they go back there again or move on?.Hopefully they will record other catches later.

Shannonbridge GAA Club Notes

Under 12 B Football Championship Replay.
Shannonbridge had to give best to a stronger Kilcormac / Killoughy team, on Sunday last, at Banagher, in their championship final replay. They kept in touch during the first half and had their best period immediately after the break, scoring a goal and point, to reduce the arrears to just two points. Although gradually overcome by a physically stronger opposition, they never gave up and battled to the end. Final score Kilcormac / Killoughy 0-15 Shannonbridge 1-3. Well done to our team and their mentors, in reaching the county final and taking it to a replay. As the first parish under age team for some years, it’s an important step and will give great encouragement for next year. Team: Barry Rohan, Bill Egan, Ronan Devery, Cathal O’Shea, Emmet Molloy, Saul O’Carroll, Elle McEvoy (Captain), Ronan Hynes (1-0), Kieran Mannion, Dylan Quinn, Bryan Rohan, Jack Darcy (0-2), Gavin Kelly, Jeremy Rigney, Cian Healy (0-1), Kevin Flynn, Jack Ryan, Paul Rigney, Aaron Brazil, Maria Egan, Dylan O’Duffy, Oisin Anderson, Michaele Anderson, Darragh O’Shea.

Celebrity Bainisteoir.
The Shannonbridge v Castleisland game is the subject of next Sunday’s programme, 10th October, on RTE 1, at 6.30pm.

Shannobridge / Doon Lottery.
There was no winner of last week’s jackpot of € 14,400. There were two match three winners. The numbers drawn were 8, 13, 25, 26. This week’s jackpot is €14,600.

Congratulations.
Congratulations to Club Chairman, Damien Brazil, on being selected to referee last week’s Asian Games in Hong Kong. Also best of luck to Damien taking charge of next week’s senior final, between Clara and Rhode.

A Day for Life - today 3rd Oct
'Day for Life' is our annual celebration of the sacredness of human life from the womb to the tomb. The Catholic Church is pro-life, and it is at the heart of what we believe. This year its theme is ‘the meaning of Christian death & care for those who are dying.’ Please read the leaflet & say the prayer, which is printed on it.

Questions people ask (Fr O’Flynn – Intercom) Q. What did Jesus mean when he said that a tiny seed of faith could uproot a tree and plant it in the sea? A. It is a colourful way of saying that faith can achieve what would be impossible to our own efforts without the aid of grace. The context of this saying is where Jesus teaches that there should be no limit to the times we are to forgive others. Forgiving may seem impossible but faith is powerful enough to pull up the roots of bitterness from the heart and cast it aside … like a tree uprooted and cast into the sea. With the grace of God people can achieve great healing of memories.
