Questions people askQ. What is the role of the elder son in the parable of the Prodigal Son?A. If we overlook the elder son we fail to see the original purpose of the parable which was addressed to the people who were scandalised by the fact that Jesus attracted sinners and broke a pious taboo by eating at table with them. The elder son’s favourite word is ‘never’. He never went away, he never asked for more … but he never shared his father’s compassion. He represents people who cry out for justice but never show any forgiveness. The ability to forgive is the surest sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Reflection for Mother's Day - from Brazil
She walks along the edge of the river with a bundle on her head.
All day she washes clothes to earn only a pittance.
She catches cold and doesn't complain.
She makes the child's milk,
She sweeps the house and cleans the table,
And clears out the shelves when he is asleep.
She is the woman of the house with no time to rest.
She makes the lunch, she makes the supper,
And some time later at night she still hasn't lain down to rest.
