The Corncrakes have started to arrive.Brian who lives on the barge told us that on Tuesday night a corncrake singing kept him awake all night while berthed at The Cut downstream of the village bridge and Peter Howes from Basingstoke told us that he heard one calling while he was fishing at Clonfert. When we rang the Corncrake Help Desk 0509-51676 today , the girl Anita knew about the one at Clonfert backwater and one heard near the railway bridge downstream of the power plant but had not heard of Brian's bird. She said they will investigate it and so far 12 birds have been identified in the local callows with ten downstream of Shannonbridge and two upstream.Keep their phone number handy if you hear one.
